Blue sapphires, a variety of the corundum mineral, owe their entrancing colors to follow parts of titanium and iron. These parts, communicating with light, produce an extent of blue shades, from sensitive periwinkle to significant sapphire. The best sapphires show a rich, smooth blue tone with subtle violet ideas, known as "Kashmir blue" after the district where these stones were once mined.
